Gage did another tour of the campsite, taking his time to scout the area.

They’d spent the last two days moving in unpredictable patterns. At least he hoped they were unpredictable.

He was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Or whatever analogy worked when your life had morphed into some kind of movie plot.

Why hadn’t he texted Sawyer to join them while they were still in cell range? The former SEAL was as tough and smart as they came. His experience was exactly what they needed right now.

Gage had seen absolutely no sign of any other humans in the woods, but that wasn't enough. With Matt’s life and safety on the line, he had to be more than sure before he made the decision as to which direction they would take for the day.

Gage thought it was time to start angling back toward the town. He wouldn't follow their trail back, but he would forge a new trail that would return them to the edge of the lake. He and Becca hadn’t yet decided whether to head toward the boat or to try another spot on the lake.

A new spot would mean they would have no transportation, but if the Cartel’s men had found their boat, they might be walking into a trap.

While having the boat would be great, Gage thought it was safer to head to a new spot and to use their cell phones to contact Dave or Sawyer or one of his brothers to pick them up.

Or the FBI.

But he trusted his brothers and his friends to come in with a low profile. They knew the lake and it wouldn’t raise any questions if any of them went out in a boat. Having strangers on the lake might raise suspicions. He wasn't sure if the FBI team that would come in would be able to pass as tourists or fishermen.

If they didn't pull off the disguise, that could be the end for Matt. And for him and Becca.

And while he now trusted Becca, he wasn’t any too sure about the rest of her organization. They’d let Lauren and her family die. They’d let Becca take Matt into hiding alone, leaving her vulnerable without anyone protecting her back.

He’d rather trust his own team.

As the dawn’s rays rose from the eastern horizon, Becca stirred and rose without waking Matt. He passed her a cup of coffee.

“Thanks.” She sipped the coffee and wrapped her hands around the mug. "I've been thinking about our next steps."

Gage grinned at her, loving how in sync they often were. “Me too.”

Her soft smile held very little humor. "I think we should ignore the boat and head to a new spot where we can get cell phone coverage. Is that what you’re thinking?"

He nodded. “It is.” He wasn’t sure about saying the next bit, but figured honesty was best. “I was also thinking we should have Dave or Sawyer pick us up.”

Becca tilted her head. “Why?”

Gage laid out his reasons and watched as she listened and considered.
